May it be warm and joyous.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) is known as the &#8220;holiday of freedom,&#8221; commemorating the Jewish Exodus from Egypt following\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48960836.html\">210 years of slavery<\/a>. Passover is regarded as the &#8220;birth&#8221; of the Jewish nation, and its lessons of struggle and identity continue to form the basis of Jewish consciousness 3,300 years after the event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Passover is an 8-day holiday (in Israel, seven days). The name derives from the fact that during the final plague \u2013 the slaying of the first born \u2013 God \u201cpassed over&#8221; the Jewish homes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30985\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30985\" style=\"width: 725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/web_cover_pics_2014-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-30985 \" alt=\"Happy Passover 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/web_cover_pics_2014-4.jpg\" width=\"725\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30985\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy Passover 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>SEDER NIGHT\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 The holiday is marked by the celebration of an elaborate Seder on the first two nights (in Israel, on the first night only). The Seder is designed to give each Jew the experience of &#8220;going from slavery unto freedom.&#8221; As recorded in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/t\/si\/48936547.html\">Haggadah<\/a>, we tell the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48959926.html\">Exodus story<\/a>and recount the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48959926.html\">Ten Plagues<\/a>. We eat symbols of slavery and freedom, and the festive meal includes many delicious\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/r\/\">recipes<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/t\/g\/48964141.html\">foods<\/a>\u00a0that people look forward to all year (think<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/r\/c\/48961596.html\">matzah balls!<\/a>). We recite the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48956001.html\">Hallel<\/a>\u00a0prayer of praise, and end the Seder with the hope of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48954161.html\">\u201cNext year in Jerusalem!\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Seder is a special tie of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/t\/si\/48959671.html\">family bonding<\/a>\u00a0and children are a particular focus of the night. They enjoy a variety of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/mm\/48969656.html\">Passover songs<\/a>\u00a0like the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/t\/si\/48938557.html\">Four Questions (Ma Nishatana), tell of the\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48951876.html\">Four Sons<\/a>, sing the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48959306.html\">\u201cDayenu\u201d<\/a>\u00a0song, try to &#8220;steal&#8221; the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48954771.html\">Afikoman<\/a>, and open the door for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48954191.html\">Elijah the Prophet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30981\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30981\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Charles-Fazzino-Wishes-Collectors-Happy-Passover-1024x697.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-30981 \" alt=\"Happy Passover 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Charles-Fazzino-Wishes-Collectors-Happy-Passover-1024x697.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy Passover 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>MATZAH\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 At the Seder, it is a special mitzvah to eat\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48957111.html\">matzah<\/a>, the Seder\u2019s main<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/t\/f\/48971121.html\">symbol<\/a>. Everyone should\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48955386.html\">try to eat<\/a>\u00a02\/3 of a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/l\/48965626.html\">square matzah<\/a>\u00a0(or 1\/2 of a round matzah) within 4 minutes, while leaning to the left. The most common reason for eating matzah is that on the morning of the Exodus, the Jews were so rushed in getting out of Egypt that the bread didn\u2019t have time to rise. At the end of the festive meal, the special \u201cdessert\u201d is another piece of matzah, called the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48954771.html\">Afikoman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>FOUR CUPS\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 At the Seder, we drink four cups of wine \u2013 corresponding to the four expressions of freedom mentioned in the Torah (Exodus 6:6-7). Everyone should have their own cup, which holds minimally 98cc (3.3 oz). Try to drink the entire cup for each of the Four Cups (or at least drink a majority) within 4 minutes. And as an expression of freedom, we lean to the left and back while drinking the Four Cups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>KARPAS\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 Toward the beginning of the Seder, we eat karpas \u2013 a vegetable (e.g. celery, parsley, potato) dipped in saltwater, to commemorate the tears of hard labor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30982\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30982\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/passover-canada.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30982\" alt=\"Happy Passover 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/passover-canada.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30982\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy Passover 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>BITTER HERBS\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 Later in the Seder, we eat\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48956816.html\">Marror<\/a>, the bitter herbs. Though many have the custom of using horseradish, Romaine lettuce is also used. (\u201cRed horseradish\u201d in jars bought from the stores should not be used, since it\u2019s a mixture of mostly beets with some horseradish.) The Marror is dipped into<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/r\/c\/48960481.html\">Charoset<\/a>, a bricks-and-mortar mixture of dates, wine, nuts and apples.<\/p>\n<p id=\"adserver-INARTICLE\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emaillists.aish.com\/?list=1\">Get Aish.com&#8217;s Free Email Updates.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>SEDER CHECKLIST\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 Seder means &#8220;order&#8221; because there are so many\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/l\/48968741.html\">details to remember<\/a>. Your Seder table should include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48970891.html\">Seder plate<\/a>\u00a0with:\n<ul>\n<li>Celery, parsley or potato (Karpas)<\/li>\n<li>Lettuce (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/h\/48956816.html\">Marror<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Horseradish (Chazeret)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/r\/c\/48960481.html\">Charoset<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Roasted chicken wing (Zero&#8217;ah)<\/li>\n<li>Hard-boiled egg (Beitzah)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>matzah cover with 3 matzot (and extra matzah)<\/li>\n<li>wine and grape juice<\/li>\n<li>Haggadahs<\/li>\n<li>cup for Elijah<\/li>\n<li>saltwater<\/li>\n<li>Kiddush cups<\/li>\n<li>pillows for reclining<\/li>\n<li>Afikomen prizes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>CHAMETZ-FREE ZONE\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 During the week of Passover, Jews are forbidden to eat or possess any chametz (leavened grain). For this reason, we dispose of (or sell) all bread, cookies, pasta, beer, etc. \u2013 and purchase only products labeled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/l\/48962036.html\">Kosher for Passover<\/a>.&#8221; (Ashkenazi Jews also refrain from eating\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/l\/48964186.html\">kitniyot<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 rice, beans, etc.) To avoid any problems of residual chametz, we also have special sets of dishes and pots for Passover. As a practical consideration, many people begin\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/l\/48970611.html\">cleaning for Passover<\/a>\u00a0weeks before the holiday begins.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30983\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30983\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/D94213_3.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30983\" alt=\"Happy Passover Spring 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/D94213_3.gif\" width=\"320\" height=\"454\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30983\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy Passover Spring 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>SEARCH-AND-BURN\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 On the evening before Passover, we conduct a careful<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/l\/48969586.html\">search of the home for chametz<\/a>. It is done by candlelight and is a memorable experience for the whole family. Any remaining chametz is either burned the next morning (in a ceremony called\u00a0<em>Sray&#8217;fat Chametz),<\/em>\u00a0or is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aish.com\/h\/pes\/l\/48966396.html\">\u00a0sold to a non-Jew<\/a>for the week of Passover. The sale must be serious and legally binding; it should be done only through the assistance of a qualified rabbi.
