I have to say, that when you get in to the 40 mega pixel range, those numbers are generally associated with Pro level Medium Format digital cameras the likes of Hasselblad. Well Nokia has broken all of the rules and have come out with their Nokia 808 Pure View camera-cell phone or is that cell phone-camera? We are talking about 41 Million Pixels and a sensor that is up to 8 times larger than the standard cell phone camera sensors.

An Imaging Revolution

The Nokia PureView Pro imaging technology is the combination of a large, super high resolution 41Mpix with high performance Carl Zeiss optics. The large sensor enables pixel oversampling, in a nutshell it means the combination of many pixels into one perfect pixel. PureView imaging technology is the result of many years of research and development and the tangible fruits of this work are amazing image quality, lossless zoom, and superior low light performance.

Nokia 808 Pure View

PureView Pro imaging technology doesn’t represent a step change for camera smartphones performance, so much as a quantum leap forward. The first device to feature Nokia PureView Pro camera technology is the Nokia 808 PureView, which gives people the means to take better images and video footage than ever before.

Nokia PureView Pro turns conventional thinking on its head. It dispenses with the usual scaling/ interpolation model of digital zoom used in virtually all smartphones, as well as optical zoom used in most digital cameras, where a series of lens elements moves back and forth to vary the magnification and field of view.

Nokia 808 Pure View Sensor Size Comparrison

The excellent camera performance also extends to video. The camera allows for 1080p recording at 30fps, with 4X lossless zoom thanks to the big sensor and powerful image processing which handles over 1 billion pixels per second. At lower resolutions, the capabilities of the zoom increase, with 6X at 720p and up to 12X lossless zoom in nHD (640 x 360) recordings. Of course great video is nothing without great audio.

Below Nokia 808 PureView Apple iPhone 4s Comparison

Here the Nokia 808 PureView also sets a new standard.
