Independence Day is the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"National Day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Day\">national day<\/a><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0of the United States<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25893\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25893\" style=\"width: 492px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/spiri-of-1776.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25893\" title=\"spiri-of-1776\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/spiri-of-1776.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"492\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Independence Day July 4, 1776<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the\u00a0<a title=\"American Revolution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Revolution\">American Revolution<\/a>, the legal separation of the\u00a0<a title=\"Thirteen Colonies\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thirteen_Colonies\">Thirteen Colonies<\/a>\u00a0from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the\u00a0<a title=\"Second Continental Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Continental_Congress\">Second Continental Congress<\/a>\u00a0voted to approve a\u00a0<a title=\"Lee Resolution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lee_Resolution\">resolution of independence<\/a>\u00a0that had been proposed in June by\u00a0<a title=\"Richard Henry Lee\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Henry_Lee\">Richard Henry Lee<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\">Virginia<\/a>\u00a0declaring the United States independent from Great Britain.<span style=\"font-size: 11px;\">\u00a0<\/span>After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the\u00a0<a title=\"United States Declaration of Independence\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence\">Declaration of Independence<\/a>, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a\u00a0<a title=\"Committee of Five\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Committee_of_Five\">Committee of Five<\/a>, with\u00a0<a title=\"Thomas Jefferson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Jefferson\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a>\u00a0as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier,\u00a0<a title=\"John Adams\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Adams\">John Adams<\/a>\u00a0had written to his wife\u00a0<a title=\"Abigail Adams\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abigail_Adams\">Abigail<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and\u00a0<a title=\"Benjamin Franklin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benjamin_Franklin\">Benjamin Franklin<\/a>\u00a0all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a remarkable coincidence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as<a title=\"President of the United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/President_of_the_United_States\">Presidents of the United States<\/a>, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration.
