Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as by Canadians internationally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/canada-day09.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25848\" title=\"canada-day09\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/canada-day09-560x420.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/canadaday2012.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25849\" title=\"canadaday2012\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/canadaday2012-560x294.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Frequently referred to as &#8220;Canada&#8217;s birthday&#8221;, particularly in the popular press,\u00a0the occasion marks the joining of the\u00a0<a title=\"British North America\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_North_America\">British North American<\/a>\u00a0colonies of\u00a0<a title=\"Nova Scotia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nova_Scotia\">Nova Scotia<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"New Brunswick\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Brunswick\">New Brunswick<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a title=\"Province of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Province_of_Canada\">Province of Canada<\/a>\u00a0into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into\u00a0<a title=\"Ontario\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ontario\">Ontario<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Quebec\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quebec\">Quebec<\/a>) on July 1, 1867. Canada became a kingdom in its own right on that date,\u00a0but the\u00a0<a title=\"Parliament of the United Kingdom\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parliament_of_the_United_Kingdom\">British Parliament<\/a>\u00a0kept limited rights of political control over the new country that were shed by stages over the years until the last vestiges were surrendered in 1982 when the\u00a0<a title=\"Constitution Act, 1982\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constitution_Act,_1982\">Constitution Act<\/a>\u00a0patriated the Canadian constitution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under the federal Holidays Act,\u00a0Canada Day is observed on July 1 unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case July 2 is the statutory holiday, although celebratory events generally take place on July 1 even though it is not the legal holiday.\u00a0If it falls on a Saturday, any businesses normally closed that day will generally dedicate the following Monday as a day off.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Canada-Day-photo-credit-Sea-and-be-Scene-dot-com4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25847\" title=\"Canada-Day-photo-credit-Sea-and-be-Scene-dot-com4\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Canada-Day-photo-credit-Sea-and-be-Scene-dot-com4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"476\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/canada-day-4751.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25846\" title=\"canada-day-4751\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/canada-day-4751-560x420.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most communities across the country will host organized celebrations for Canada Day, usually outdoor public events, such as parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, air and maritime shows, fireworks, and free musical concerts,\u00a0as well as\u00a0<a title=\"Oath of Citizenship (Canada)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oath_of_Citizenship_(Canada)\">citizenship ceremonies<\/a>\u00a0for new citizens.There is no standard mode of celebration for Canada Day; professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford\u00a0<a title=\"Jennifer Welsh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jennifer_Welsh\">Jennifer Welsh<\/a>\u00a0said of this: &#8220;Canada Day, like the country, is endlessly decentralized. There doesn&#8217;t seem to be a central recipe for how to celebrate it\u2014chalk it up to the nature of the federation.&#8221;However, the locus of the celebrations is the national capital,\u00a0<a title=\"Ottawa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ottawa\">Ottawa<\/a>, Ontario, where large concerts and cultural displays are held on\u00a0<a title=\"Parliament Hill\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parliament_Hill\">Parliament Hill<\/a>, with the\u00a0<a title=\"Governor General of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Governor_General_of_Canada\">governor general<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Prime Minister of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prime_Minister_of_Canada\">prime minister<\/a>\u00a0typically officiating, though\u00a0<a title=\"Monarchy of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monarchy_of_Canada\">the monarch<\/a>\u00a0or another member of the<a title=\"Monarchy of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monarchy_of_Canada#Canadian_Royal_Family\">Royal Family<\/a>\u00a0may also attend or take the governor general&#8217;s place. Smaller events are mounted in other parks around the city and in Gatineau, Quebec<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Given the federal nature of the holiday, celebrating Canada Day can be a cause of friction in the province of\u00a0<a title=\"Quebec\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quebec\">Quebec<\/a>, where the holiday is overshadowed by Quebec&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"National Holiday (Quebec)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Holiday_(Quebec)\">National Holiday<\/a>, on June 24.For example, the federal government funds Canada Day events at the\u00a0<a title=\"Old Port of Montreal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Port_of_Montreal\">Old Port of Montreal<\/a>\u2014an area run by a federal\u00a0<a title=\"Crown corporations of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crown_corporations_of_Canada\">Crown corporation<\/a>\u2014while the National Holiday parade is a<a title=\"Grassroots\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grassroots\">grassroots<\/a>\u00a0effort that has been met with pressure to cease, even from federal officials.\u00a0The nature of the event has also been met with criticism outside of Quebec, such as that given by\u00a0<em><a title=\"Ottawa Citizen\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ottawa_Citizen\">Ottawa Citizen<\/a><\/em>\u00a0columnist David Warren, who said in 2007: &#8220;The Canada of the government-funded paper flag-waving and painted faces\u2014the &#8216;new&#8217; Canada that is celebrated each year on what is now called &#8216;Canada Day&#8217;\u2014has nothing controversially Canadian about it. You could wave a different flag, and choose another face paint, and nothing would be lost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Canada Day also coincides with Quebec&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Moving Day (Quebec)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moving_Day_(Quebec)\">Moving Day<\/a>, when many fixed-lease apartment rental terms expire. The bill changing the province&#8217;s moving day from May 1 to July 1 was introduced by a federalist member of the\u00a0<a title=\"National Assembly of Quebec\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Assembly_of_Quebec\">Quebec National Assembly<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"J\u00e9r\u00f4me Choquette\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J%C3%A9r%C3%B4me_Choquette\">J\u00e9r\u00f4me Choquette<\/a>\u00a0in 1973,\u00a0in order not to affect children still in school in the month of May.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/2012626-ashbridge-bay-fireworks.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25845\" title=\"2012626-ashbridge-bay-fireworks\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/2012626-ashbridge-bay-fireworks-560x371.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\"
