Canada Day<\/strong>\u00a0(French<\/a>:\u00a0F\u00eate du Canada<\/em>) is the\u00a0national day<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Canada<\/a>, a\u00a0federal statutory holiday<\/a>celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the\u00a0British North America Act, 1867<\/a>\u00a0(today called the\u00a0Constitution Act, 1867<\/a>, in Canada), which united three\u00a0colonies<\/a>\u00a0into a single country called\u00a0Canada<\/em>\u00a0within the\u00a0British Empire<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>Originally called\u00a0Dominion Day<\/a>(French<\/a>:\u00a0Le Jour de la Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration<\/em>), the name was changed in 1982, the year the\u00a0Canada Act<\/a>\u00a0was passed. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as by Canadians internationally.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Frequently referred to as “Canada’s birthday”, particularly in the popular press,\u00a0the occasion marks the joining of the\u00a0British North American<\/a>\u00a0colonies of\u00a0Nova Scotia<\/a>,\u00a0New Brunswick<\/a>, and the\u00a0Province of Canada<\/a>\u00a0into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into\u00a0Ontario<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Quebec<\/a>) on July 1, 1867. Canada became a kingdom in its own right on that date,\u00a0but the\u00a0British Parliament<\/a>\u00a0kept limited rights of political control over the new country that were shed by stages over the years until the last vestiges were surrendered in 1982 when the\u00a0Constitution Act<\/a>\u00a0patriated the Canadian constitution.<\/p>\n

Under the federal Holidays Act,\u00a0Canada Day is observed on July 1 unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case July 2 is the statutory holiday, although celebratory events generally take place on July 1 even though it is not the legal holiday.\u00a0If it falls on a Saturday, any businesses normally closed that day will generally dedicate the following Monday as a day off.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Most communities across the country will host organized celebrations for Canada Day, usually outdoor public events, such as parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, air and maritime shows, fireworks, and free musical concerts,\u00a0as well as\u00a0citizenship ceremonies<\/a>\u00a0for new citizens.There is no standard mode of celebration for Canada Day; professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford\u00a0Jennifer Welsh<\/a>\u00a0said of this: “Canada Day, like the country, is endlessly decentralized. There doesn’t seem to be a central recipe for how to celebrate it\u2014chalk it up to the nature of the federation.”However, the locus of the celebrations is the national capital,\u00a0Ottawa<\/a>, Ontario, where large concerts and cultural displays are held on\u00a0Parliament Hill<\/a>, with the\u00a0governor general<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0prime minister<\/a>\u00a0typically officiating, though\u00a0the monarch<\/a>\u00a0or another member of theRoyal Family<\/a>\u00a0may also attend or take the governor general’s place. Smaller events are mounted in other parks around the city and in Gatineau, Quebec<\/p>\n

Given the federal nature of the holiday, celebrating Canada Day can be a cause of friction in the province of\u00a0Quebec<\/a>, where the holiday is overshadowed by Quebec’s\u00a0National Holiday<\/a>, on June 24.For example, the federal government funds Canada Day events at the\u00a0Old Port of Montreal<\/a>\u2014an area run by a federal\u00a0Crown corporation<\/a>\u2014while the National Holiday parade is agrassroots<\/a>\u00a0effort that has been met with pressure to cease, even from federal officials.\u00a0The nature of the event has also been met with criticism outside of Quebec, such as that given by\u00a0Ottawa Citizen<\/a><\/em>\u00a0columnist David Warren, who said in 2007: “The Canada of the government-funded paper flag-waving and painted faces\u2014the ‘new’ Canada that is celebrated each year on what is now called ‘Canada Day’\u2014has nothing controversially Canadian about it. You could wave a different flag, and choose another face paint, and nothing would be lost.”<\/p>\n

Canada Day also coincides with Quebec’s\u00a0Moving Day<\/a>, when many fixed-lease apartment rental terms expire. The bill changing the province’s moving day from May 1 to July 1 was introduced by a federalist member of the\u00a0Quebec National Assembly<\/a>,\u00a0J\u00e9r\u00f4me Choquette<\/a>\u00a0in 1973,\u00a0in order not to affect children still in school in the month of May.<\/p>\n
