In France, it is formally called\u00a0<strong>La F\u00eate Nationale<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>The National Celebration<\/em>) and commonly\u00a0<strong>le quatorze juillet<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>the fourteenth of July<\/em>). It commemorates the 1790\u00a0<a title=\"F\u00eate de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/F%C3%AAte_de_la_F%C3%A9d%C3%A9ration\">F\u00eate de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration<\/a>, held on the first anniversary of the\u00a0<a title=\"Storming of the Bastille\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Storming_of_the_Bastille\">storming of the Bastille<\/a>\u00a0on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the\u00a0<a title=\"Bastille\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bastille\">Bastille<\/a>\u00a0fortress-prison was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the\u00a0<a title=\"First Republic (France)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Republic_(France)\">First Republic<\/a>, during the\u00a0<a title=\"French Revolution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Revolution\">French Revolution<\/a>. Festivities and official ceremonies are held all over France. The oldest and largest regular\u00a0<a title=\"Bastille Day Military Parade\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bastille_Day_Military_Parade\">military parade<\/a>\u00a0in Europe is held on the morning of 14 July, on the\u00a0<a title=\"Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Champs-%C3%89lys%C3%A9es\">Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es<\/a>\u00a0avenue in\u00a0<a title=\"Paris\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris\">Paris<\/a>\u00a0in front of the\u00a0<a title=\"President of France\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/President_of_France\">President of the Republic<\/a>, French officials and foreign guests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On 17 May 1789,\u00a0<a title=\"Louis XVI of France\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_XVI_of_France\">Louis XVI<\/a>\u00a0convened the\u00a0<a title=\"Estates-General of 1789\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Estates-General_of_1789\">Estates-General<\/a>\u00a0to hear their grievances. The deputies of the\u00a0<a title=\"Third Estate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Third_Estate\">Third Estate<\/a>\u00a0representing the common people (the two others were the\u00a0<a title=\"Catholic Church\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_Church\">Catholic Church<\/a>and\u00a0<a title=\"Nobility\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nobility\">nobility<\/a>) decided to break away and form a\u00a0<a title=\"National Assembly (French Revolution)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Assembly_(French_Revolution)\">National Assembly<\/a>. On 20 June the deputies of the Third Estate took the\u00a0<a title=\"Tennis Court Oath\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennis_Court_Oath\">Tennis Court Oath<\/a>, swearing not to separate until a constitution had been established. They were gradually joined by delegates of the other estates;\u00a0<a title=\"Louis XVI of France\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_XVI_of_France\">Louis XVI<\/a>\u00a0started to recognize their validity on 27 June. The assembly re-named itself the National Constituent Assembly on 9 July, and began to function as a legislature and to draft a constitution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the wake of the 11 July dismissal of\u00a0<a title=\"Jacques Necker\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacques_Necker\">Jacques Necker<\/a>, the people of\u00a0<a title=\"Paris\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris\">Paris<\/a>, fearful that they and their representatives would be attacked by the royal military, and seeking to gain ammunition and gunpowder for the general populace, stormed the\u00a0<a title=\"Bastille\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bastille\">Bastille<\/a>, a fortress-prison in Paris which had often held people jailed on the basis of\u00a0<em><a title=\"Lettre de cachet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lettre_de_cachet\">lettres de cachet<\/a><\/em>, arbitrary royal indictments that could not be appealed. Besides holding a large cache of ammunition and gunpowder, the Bastille had been known for holding political prisoners whose writings had displeased the royal government, and was thus a symbol of the\u00a0<a title=\"Political absolutism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Political_absolutism\">absolutism<\/a>\u00a0of the monarchy. As it happened, at the time of the siege in July 1789 there were only seven inmates, none of great political significance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\" draggable=\"\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_19674\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 235px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/2011\/07\/14\/happy-bastille-day-la-fete-nationale-france-july-14th\/drapeaux\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19674\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19674\" title=\"DRAPEAUX\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/DRAPEAUX.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">French Flags<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the crowd\u2014eventually reinforced by mutinous\u00a0<em><a title=\"Gardes Fran\u00e7aises\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gardes_Fran%C3%A7aises\">gardes fran\u00e7aises<\/a><\/em>\u2014proved a fair match for the fort&#8217;s defenders, Governor de Launay, the commander of the Bastille, capitulated and opened the gates to avoid a mutual massacre. However, possibly because of a misunderstanding, fighting resumed. Ninety-eight attackers and just one defender died in the actual fighting, but in the aftermath, de Launay and seven other defenders were killed, as was the &#8216;pr\u00e9v\u00f4t des marchands&#8217; (roughly, mayor)\u00a0<a title=\"Jacques de Flesselles\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacques_de_Flesselles\">Jacques de Flesselles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The storming of the Bastille was more important as a rallying point and symbolic act of rebellion than a practical act of defiance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shortly after the storming of the Bastille, on 4 August\u00a0<a title=\"Feudalism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Feudalism\">feudalism<\/a>\u00a0was abolished and on 26 August, the\u00a0<a title=\"Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Declaration_of_the_Rights_of_Man_and_of_the_Citizen\">Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen<\/a>\u00a0proclaimed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bastille Day is the French National Day which is celebrated on 14 July of each year.
