{"id":13867,"date":"2011-02-10T18:28:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-10T17:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/?p=13867"},"modified":"2011-02-10T18:28:00","modified_gmt":"2011-02-10T17:28:00","slug":"working-16bit-mode-photoshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/rebuild\/technical-tips\/working-16bit-mode-photoshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Working in 16 Bit Mode in Photoshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_13868\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13868\" style=\"width: 413px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-13868\" href=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/2011\/02\/10\/working-16bit-mode-photoshop\/attachment\/273\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13868\" title=\"273\" src=\"https:\/\/thebkmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Adobe Corporation<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<em><strong>by: <a href=\"http:\/\/photo.net\/photos\/dietmar\" target=\"_blank\">Dietmar Kohl<\/a><\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nPhotographer Dietmar Kohl shares with us his technique for working in 16 bit mode in Photoshop.<br \/>\nThanks Dietmar, I&#8217;m sure this will be very helpful to those wishing to maintain the highest resolution when retouching your images.<br \/>\nBenjamin Kanarek<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So here we go&#8230;<br \/>\nI just downloaded\u00a0 the RAW images and started to work on them in Photoshop.\u00a0\u00a0 I prepared the image from the\u00a0 Canon RAW 5.0 file.<br \/>\nI started working on RAW images.<br \/>\nWhen I open the image in Photoshop I open it in an 8bit mode.<br \/>\n(To switch to 16-bit mode I follow this sequence: image&gt;mode&gt;16bits\/channel and then select it.<br \/>\nNow it is set to\u00a0 16-bit mode.\u00a0 It will display on top of your image (RGB\/16).<br \/>\n(If you prepared your image in Canon RAW 5 image then there is little work left to do on the image which is a very good start.)<br \/>\nAlso, I prepare my camera so that I get the results\/image I want almost without doing any work in photoshop\u00a0 prior to downloading the image.<br \/>\nSo the less I work on your image the less qualityloss there is, such as\u00a0 bending of the pixel depixilation discoloration and more.<br \/>\nThe best thing to do is working with adjustment layers.\u00a0 It iss a little half circle black and white icon\u00a0 in the the layers\/channels\/paths area.<br \/>\nI open it by going to windows &gt; LAYERS and click on it.<br \/>\nThen I am\u00a0 ready to use the ADJUSTMENTLAYERS which doesn&#8217;t change the pixels but changes\u00a0 the brightness\/contrast levels, curves exposure color balance and so on.<br \/>\nIt is\u00a0 a wonderful way without harming the original image.<br \/>\nWhat W miss is the shadow\/highlight tool but if I prepare my image already before I start to work on it then I can use it lightly to lighten up the shadows darken the lights lower the contrast between the two.<br \/>\nI can also save the 16-bit image with all the layers in PSD format.<br \/>\n(If you have a more capable\u00a0 computer with\u00a0 higher memory\/RAM, it will download it faster otherwise it will take awhile.<br \/>\nI\u00a0 flatten the image by going to LAYER&gt; flatten image.<br \/>\nIt makes it easier to download in the 16-bit mode.<br \/>\nA download of the PSD file in 16-bit mode and a JPEG in the smaller size, 8-bit mode the I see what&#8217;s in the PSD file and then I can manage to e-mail it.<br \/>\nAt the end don&#8217;t forget to download\/save it in an 8-bit mode or PSD file for printing because that&#8217;s what you need to print.<br \/>\nYou can also scan your BW color negative slides in 16-bit mode and also 48-bit mode color.\u00a0\u00a0 Did you know that could be done &#8211; Ah, but that is another story !<br \/>\nSo try the 16-BIT MODE you will have fun and you&#8217;ll see the difference in the prints you make !<br \/>\nBenjamin, I wrote this out of my own experience the way I do it.<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t do it this way for a long time until I found out about by mistake.<br \/>\nPerhaps you find it useful and can use it !<br \/>\nGreetings and a Happy New Year !<br \/>\nDietmar Kohl<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by: Dietmar Kohl Photographer Dietmar Kohl shares with us his technique for working in 16 bit mode in Photoshop.
